Founded in the 17th century under the name Fort-Royal, Fort-de-France is home to several iconic monuments that reflect its rich history and centuries of development.

Nearby stands Fort Saint-Louis, built in the 17th century to protect the bay. Since 2011, the bay has been recognised by The Most Beautiful Bays in the World Club, thanks to both its breathtaking scenery and the remarkable biodiversity of its marine environment. It is also the perfect starting point for boat excursions or ferry crossings to Trois-Îlets, Anses-d’Arlet and Pointe du Bout.

The Grand Covered Market is a true celebration of local flavours and traditions. It is also the perfect place to meet local vendors, who proudly share Martinique’s traditions with visitors.

Among the highlights are several Carnival celebrations as well as the Fort-de-France Cultural Festival, organised each summer by SERMAC. Concerts, dance performances, theatre productions, exhibitions and artistic events bring the capital to life for several weeks.
